Laszlo Hanyecz pays 10,000 BTC for two pizzas — the first documented real-world purchase.
On 22 May 2010, Florida programmer Laszlo Hanyecz got two Papa John’s pizzas delivered in exchange for 10,000 BTC, arranged on the Bitcointalk forum — around forty dollars’ worth at the time. It is the first documented purchase of physical goods with bitcoin, and the community has celebrated “Pizza Day” every May 22nd since.
The easy joke is what the pizzas “cost” at today’s price — the live number is below. The better reading is the one Laszlo himself gives: someone had to prove bitcoin could buy things, and he did. Money that nobody spends never becomes money.
