Every 2,016 blocks (about two weeks), Bitcoin automatically retunes how hard the mining puzzle is, so that blocks keep arriving roughly every ten minutes regardless of how much hashrate has joined or left the network.
The difficulty adjustment is Bitcoin’s thermostat: it is why the issuance schedule stays on time through mining booms, bans and busts alike — no other commodity’s production is immune to a supply response.
